Why does gold (Au) occur in nature as a free element?

Because its reactivity is very low. Gold sits at the very bottom of the activity series, so it does not react with the active constituents of the atmosphere under ordinary conditions.
A highly reactive metal would occur combined instead — as sodium and potassium do. Rarity and density are not the reason.
