Lesson: Chapter 6 — The Structure and Function of Plant and Animal Cells

6.4. Cell organelles and structures 1 of 8

Division of labour inside a cell

From here on the organelles are taken one at a time. But before that, there is a single idea that ties all of them together.

Division of labour

Every structure within a cell carries out a function peculiar to itself. That is to say, a cell shows a division of labour inside it.

What that means

A cell is not a bag with parts thrown into it at random. Releasing energy is the work of one organelle; making protein is the work of another; packing material for export is the work of a third. So the moment you meet the name of an organelle, you already know there is one job that belongs to it.

That is the shape of what follows

The next six pages introduce ten structures. For each of them, answer two questions: what is it, and what does it do. The last page gathers all ten pairs into one table.

Worth remembering

Most of these organelles cannot be observed with a light microscope, so an electron microscope has to be used for them. You did not see them in Activities 01 and 02 not because they were absent, but because the microscope you used was not enough to show them.
