Lesson: Chapter 11 — Turning Effect of a Force

11.2. Couple of forces 6 of 12

Question 6

What happens when a couple is applied to a body that is free to move?

The right answer is the one marked above.

It produces turning but no linear motion. The resultant force is zero so the body goes nowhere; the two moments add, so it turns.

Forces adding to zero does not mean the moments add to zero. A couple is the clearest demonstration there is that the two are separate.
