Lesson: Chapter 11 — Turning Effect of a Force

11.2. Couple of forces 9 of 12

Question 9

A driver turning a steering wheel applies forces of 6 N on either side of the wheel, in opposite directions. The perpendicular distance between the two lines of action is 0.5 m. What is the moment of the couple?

The right answer is the one marked above.

3 N m. moment = force × distance between the lines = 6 N × 0.5 m = 3 N m.

Adding the two 6 N forces into 12 N, or halving the distance, are the traps. What goes into the formula is one force and the full distance between the lines.
