Lesson: Chapter 19 — Current Electricity

19. Electricity and safety 5 of 5

Putting the chapter together

Everything the chapter asked you to keep, in one place.

Summary

  • When certain materials are rubbed against one another, electrons are exchanged between those materials.
  • An electric current is flowing electric charges.
  • The direction of the conventional current is from the positive terminal to the negative terminal.
  • The potential difference between the terminals of a cell when no current is being drawn from it is the electromotive force of that cell.
  • Ohm's law states that, when the temperature is constant, the current flowing through a conductor is proportional to the potential difference between its two ends.
  • Electrical resistance is the obstruction to a current flowing through a circuit.
  • There are two main ways of connecting resistors in a circuit: the parallel arrangement and the series arrangement.
  • The overall resistance of a system of resistors is called the equivalent resistance.

Three quantities, three units, one equation

Current in amperes, potential difference in volts, resistance in ohms, and V = IR joining all three. Nearly every calculation in this chapter is that equation applied to something.
