The follicles of the ovary. Primary follicles, and the later stages arising from them — Graafian follicles, corpora lutea and corpora albicantia — can all be seen within the ovary.

An ovary in section has two zones, the cortex and the medulla, but neither is where the ovum itself is made. The fallopian tube carries the ovum away, and the uterus receives what it becomes.
