The two genes lie on the same chromosome. A gamete gets whole chromosomes, so genes on the same chromosome usually travel together. They are said to be linked.

Linkage is some of the strongest evidence that genes are physically attached to something that moves as a unit. Free-floating factors would have no reason to travel together.
