Lesson: Chapter 9 — Resultant Force

9.4. The resultant of two inclined forces 2 of 6

Question 2

Forces of 5 N and 12 N act on an object inclined to one another. What can be said about the resultant?

The right answer is the one marked above.

This chapter cannot give the magnitude; only that the direction lies between the two forces. Finding the magnitude of inclined forces needs a method for adding vectors, which comes in later classes.

Adding or subtracting is valid only when the forces lie on one line or are parallel. Do not do it when you meet two inclined forces.
