Weight changes with place
Weight depends on g. So wherever g changes, weight changes with it.
Going higher up
As you go up from sea level the acceleration due to gravity gradually decreases. So when a mass is carried up a mountain its mass stays constant but its weight falls.
On the moon
On the moon's surface the acceleration due to gravity is about 1 ÷ 6 of its value on earth.
So an object's weight on the moon is about 1 ÷ 6 of its weight on earth. Its mass, though, is unchanged.
A man of 60 kg
| Place | Mass | g | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earth | 60 kg | 10 m s−2 | 600 N |
| Moon | 60 kg | 10 ÷ 6 m s−2 | 100 N |
The mass column does not change; the weight column drops to a sixth.
Walking on the moon
You will have seen astronauts bounding along on the moon. Their mass is the same there as here — all that changed is the force pulling them down.
