What happens when an object is carried from sea level up a high mountain?

The mass is unchanged; the weight decreases. As you go up from sea level the acceleration due to gravity gradually decreases.

Since weight = m g, a smaller g means a smaller weight. But the amount of matter in the object does not change, so the mass stays the same.

It is a smaller version of what happens on the moon. The difference is tiny, which is why it goes unnoticed in daily life.
