Gregor Mendel. Working in a monastery garden, he crossed pea plants, counted the offspring, and worked out the rules by which characteristics pass from parents to offspring.

Morgan comes later in this chapter, for gene linkage. Mendel knew nothing of chromosomes or DNA — he deduced everything from the numbers.
