Lesson: Chapter 11 — Turning Effect of a Force

11.1. Moment of a force 1 of 16

Question 1

A force is applied to a pivoted body at some distance from the pivot axis. What happens?

The right answer is the one marked above.

It turns about an axis. The pivot stops the body travelling forward, and because the force acts away from the axis it produces a turning effect.

The trap is assuming a force always moves a body forward. Once the body is pivoted, turning is the only thing left for it to do.
