A pencil is flicked with exactly the same strength on a table and then on a much smoother surface. On the smoother surface it travels a good deal further before stopping. Why?

The frictional force on the smoother surface is smaller. A smaller resisting force takes longer to bring the pencil to rest, so it covers more distance first.
"No friction at all" goes too far. If friction were truly zero the pencil would never stop — it would travel on for ever.
