Lesson: Chapter 4 — Newton's Laws of Motion

Newton's second law 4 of 9

Question 4

A force of 40 N is applied to an object of mass 10 kg. What is its acceleration?

The right answer is the one marked above.

4 m s−2. Here the unknown is the acceleration, so solve F = ma for a:

40 = 10 × a

a = 40 ÷ 10 = 4 m s−2

0.25 comes from dividing the other way round (10 ÷ 40). Always write F = ma, substitute what you have, and solve for the letter left over.
