Lesson: Chapter 13 — The Living World

13.1. Protista and Fungi 2 of 6

Kingdom Protista

The organisms of Kingdom Protista are made of eukaryotic cells. They are unicellular, or multicellular with no specialised tissue.

Figure to be added

Figure 13.7 — organisms of Kingdom Protista: green algae (e.g. Ulva) and protozoa (e.g. Paramecium).

They live in any environment that has water, and most are photosynthetic. Some species are heterotrophic. Organisms such as algae and protozoa belong to this kingdom.

Two ways of feeding inside one kingdom

Algae are autotrophs — they make food by photosynthesis. Protozoa are heterotrophs — they go and find it. Protista is the unusual group that holds both.

Algae by colour

The algae of Kingdom Protista are grouped by their external colour — green, brown, red and the diatoms. Red algae have very large bodies, so "protists are microscopic" is not always true.
