Rate in everyday life
The whole chapter comes down to five points.
- Different chemical reactions take place at different rates.
- The rate of reaction is the amount of change that takes place in unit time.
- The surface area of the reactants (their physical form), the temperature the reaction runs at, the concentration of the reactants (the pressure, for gaseous reactants) and catalysts are the factors that affect the rate of reaction.
- Knowledge of the rate of reaction is put to wide use in the chemical industries and in industrial processes.
- It matters for everyday tasks as well.
Where you use this
You can now go back to the food-storage example from the fourth section — but this time with an explanation. A refrigerator lowers the temperature; chewing food increases its surface area; the drop of sulphuric acid is an inhibitor.
