A resistor reads 1000 Ω with a tolerance of ± 10%. What is the range of values it could actually have?
The right answer is the one marked above.
900 Ω to 1100 Ω. Ten per cent of 1000 is 100, so the value may lie anywhere between 1000 − 100 and 1000 + 100.
Work out the amount of the variation first and then add and subtract it. Trying to do both steps at once is where this goes wrong.
