Question 5
Why does prevention carry so much weight with sexually transmitted diseases?
The right answer is the one marked above.
Two of the four cannot be cured at all, and symptoms may be absent, mild or temporary. For the incurable ones prevention is the only measure that exists, and a person cannot rely on noticing the others.
Herpes is not fatal, and testing is available free and confidentially at government STD clinics — so “all of them are fatal if untreated” and “none of them can be identified by testing” are both wrong. Confining the damage to the sexual organs understates the harm: untreated infections cause blindness, lameness and damage to the nervous system.
