Lesson: Chapter 17 — Rate of Reaction

17.1. Surface area of the reactants 4 of 6

Question 4

When a solid reacts with a liquid, where does the reaction take place?

The right answer is the one marked above.

Only on the surface of the solid. That is the only place the reactant particles can meet.

A particle in the middle of the solid is surrounded by more particles of the solid — it meets an acid molecule only once the layers above it have reacted and gone. The reaction eats inwards from the outside.
