Question 7
A gardener finds two pumpkin flowers. The first has a tiny pumpkin already behind it; the second sits on a plain stalk. What are they?
The right answer is the one marked above.
Pistillate and staminate. The tiny pumpkin is the ovary, waiting — so the first flower carries the gynoecium and is pistillate. The second carries only the androecium and will drop off.
Staminate and pistillate has them the right way round as a pair but assigned to the wrong flowers. Pumpkin flowers are unisexual, which rules out both of the bisexual answers — and a flower with no ovary cannot grow a fruit however well it is pollinated.
