Archaea — life at the extremes
The organisms of Domain Archaea are prokaryotic — they have no organised nucleus.
Where they live
They are organisms able to live in extreme environments — places no other organism could tolerate at all.
Volcanoes
Deserts
Ice fields
Hot springs
Ocean floor
Salt flats
Not sensitive to antibiotics
Not being sensitive to most antibiotics, they cannot be destroyed by antibiotics. This is the chief thing separating them from the bacteria of the next page.
Examples
- Methanogens
- Halophiles
Both names say what they do: methanogens generate methane, and halophiles are lovers of salt.
