Only if their large size is inherited rather than the result of feeding. Selecting the biggest animal is pointless if its size came from being well fed, because only genes are passed to the next generation.

Selective breeding is the first skill of this chapter used deliberately. It selects phenotypes in order to select genotypes, so it works only when the two are connected.
