An athlete trains for many years and develops very strong muscles. Why is their child not born with those muscles?

Characteristics produced by exercise are not inherited. The muscle was acquired during the athlete’s own lifetime. It never entered the gametes, so there was nothing about it to pass on.

What the child does inherit is the genotype — including whatever capacity for building muscle that genotype allows. The training itself goes no further.
