Lesson: Chapter 3 — Mixtures

Homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures 1 of 4

How well mixed matters

When a mixture is made, how thoroughly the components are mixed is not a detail. Three everyday cases show what goes wrong when the mixing is poor.

Paint

If paints are not mixed properly when a colour is being made up, the coat you brush on does not come out one even colour.

Cake

If the ingredients are not mixed properly, the taste changes from place to place in the cake, and it rises unevenly as well.

Medicine

If the ingredients of a medicine are not mixed properly, the strength is not the same in every tablet, capsule or spoonful of the liquid.

Why the third one is the serious one

Uneven paint is a nuisance and an uneven cake is a disappointment. An uneven medicine is neither. A dose that should hold the same amount of active ingredient every time might hold too little to work, or enough to harm.

The same risk, in the field

Weedicides and pesticides are mixed with water before spraying. Mixed unevenly, part of the crop gets too little to have any effect and part of it gets a dose strong enough to damage the plants.

So: is this mixture even, or is it not?

That is a question you can actually answer by experiment rather than by opinion, and the next page does exactly that with two mixtures that look, at first, much the same.
