In a filtration, what is the difference between the residue and the filtrate?

The residue stayed on the filter and the filtrate passed through. Particles larger than the holes are held back as the residue; the solution that gets through is the filtrate.

In activity 3.3.1 the clay was the residue and the salt solution was the filtrate — and evaporating that filtrate then left the salt behind in the dish.
