Why are sclerenchyma cells dead?

Because lignin coats the wall all round, cutting the contents off from water and dissolved substances. The thickening that makes the cell strong is the same thickening that kills it.

The plant loses nothing by this. What it wanted was the strong empty box, and the box goes on holding the plant up for as long as it stands.
