In activity 3.1.9, 5 g of sugar is added to 50 ml of water and 5 g to 50 ml of kerosene. What is seen?

The right answer is the one marked above.

It dissolves in the water and barely at all in the kerosene. Sugar is polar and water is polar, so they are alike; kerosene is non-polar, so it is not.

Same solute, same mass, same temperature — only the solvent changed, so the nature of the solvent is what the difference has to be down to.
