Lesson: Chapter 9 — Resultant Force

9.2. The resultant of two collinear forces 6 of 12

Question 6

When two forces are applied collinearly in opposite directions on an object, how is the resultant force obtained?

The right answer is the one marked above.

The difference; its direction is the direction of the larger force. That is why the rope moves the way it does in a tug of war.

The sum applies only when the forces act the same way. And the resultant is zero only when the two forces are equal — not always.
