Question 7
Two children push a box on a horizontal surface. One applies 15 N from the left towards the right, the other 11 N from the right towards the left. What is the resultant of these two forces?
The right answer is the one marked above.
4 N, towards the right. The forces oppose, so take the difference: 15 N − 11 N = 4 N. The larger force points right, so the resultant does too.
26 N is what you get by adding them, which is right only if both act the same way. Saying the direction is left mistakes which force is the larger.
