In the circuit, so the whole current passes through it. The ammeter must be inserted into the path, which means breaking the wire and putting the meter in the gap.

Connecting it across the bulb without breaking the circuit is how a voltmeter is connected. Swapping the two is the most common wiring mistake in this chapter.
