Lesson: Chapter 8 — Characteristics of Living Organisms

8.8. Growth and development 4 of 4

Growth is not development

Growth is increase; development is change. They happen together, but they are not the same thing.

Growth

An irreversible increase in dry weight. It can be measured — height, weight, number of leaves.

Development

A rise in the complexity of cells. It is measured not by a number but by a new ability.

Figure to be added

Figure 8.13 — growth and development in a human being: several stages from infant to adult.

Figure to be added

Figure 8.14 — growth and development in a plant: from the seedling to the plant bearing flowers and fruit.

Compare the two figures

In the plant figure the difference between the first seedling and the last plant is not only height — the last plant has flowers and fruit, which the seedling did not. Getting taller is growth; being able to flower is development.

That completes the eight

All eight characteristics of the chapter are now covered. You can now tell the living and non-living things in the environment apart — mostly. The last section is about what that "mostly" means.
