Lesson: Chapter 10 — Chemical Bonds

10.1. Ionic bonds 9 of 10

Question 9

What does the formula NaCl actually tell you?

The right answer is the one marked above.

The ratio of sodium ions to chloride ions in the lattice. One sodium ion for every chloride ion, repeated throughout a continuous crystal.

There is no NaCl molecule. Each ion has six neighbours of the opposite kind, so the crystal cannot be divided into pairs, and no ion is bonded to one particular partner.
