Why everyday names are not enough
Every language names things with words of its own, and various names are used for living things as well. But those names change with the language, with the country and with the region.
The problem
One animal or plant has different names from place to place. Two different animals can share a name as well. Two scientists then cannot establish whether they are talking about the same organism at all.
The second problem
And the relationships between organisms do not emerge from such names. Nothing in the words "cobra" and "python" says the two belong to the same group.
So a new method was needed
Scientists made efforts to get around this and to identify organisms by a suitable common name. The next page has the solution they arrived at.
