Lesson: Chapter 14 — Continuity of Life

14.2. Pollinating agents 1 of 5

Three agents

The agents that contribute to the pollination of flowers are called pollinating agents. There are three main pollinating agents.

  1. Animals
  2. Wind
  3. Water

Read the flower and you know the agent

A flower is shaped by whatever carries its pollen, and the shaping is so consistent that you can work backwards from it. Large, scented, coloured petals mean an animal. Small, dull flowers held high with clouds of light pollen mean wind. Flowers that break off and float mean water.

Each of the next three pages takes one agent and lists the adaptations a flower shows in order to carry out pollination better by means of it.
