Lesson: Chapter 14 — Continuity of Life

14.2. Pollinating agents 2 of 5

Pollination by animals

Flowers pollinated by animals are called zoophilous flowers. Among animals, the ones that contribute most to pollination are insects.

These flowers show adaptations for attracting insects and carrying out the process of pollination better:

  • the flowers being fragrant;
  • the flowers being large;
  • the flowers being colourful;
  • nectaries being present;
  • the pollen being sticky;
  • the stigma being sticky;
  • the stamens and stigma being placed so as to brush against the body of the animal;
  • bearing shapes that deceive insects.

Examples of flowers pollinated by animals — passion fruit, winged bean, agati, Thunbergia.

A bargain, and sometimes a trick

Most of this list is a payment: scent and colour advertise, nectar rewards, stickiness makes the pollen stay on the visitor. The last item is not. Some flowers bear a shape that deceives an insect into visiting — it is paid nothing, and the flower is pollinated all the same.
