Lesson: Chapter 19 — Current Electricity

19.7. Resistors in parallel 3 of 6

Question 3

A 12 Ω resistor and a 6 Ω resistor are connected in parallel. What is the equivalent resistance?

The right answer is the one marked above.

4 Ω. 1 ÷ R = 1 ÷ 12 + 1 ÷ 6 = 1 ÷ 12 + 2 ÷ 12 = 3 ÷ 12, so R = 4 Ω.

18 Ω is the series answer. A parallel total is always smaller than the smallest resistor in the set, so anything above 6 Ω is wrong on sight.
