Lesson: Chapter 19 — Current Electricity

19.7. Resistors in parallel 4 of 6

Question 4

A 12 Ω and a 6 Ω resistor in parallel are connected across a 6 V supply. What is the total current in the system?

The right answer is the one marked above.

1.5 A. The equivalent resistance is 4 Ω, so I = V ÷ R = 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5 A.

Check it against the branches: 0.5 A through the 12 Ω plus 1 A through the 6 Ω is 1.5 A. The branch currents always add to the total.
