Lesson: Chapter 2 — Motion in a Straight Line

2.2. Speed 4 of 6

Question 4

A vehicle travels 100 km from a place near Colombo to Peradeniya in 2 hours. What is its average speed?

The right answer is the one marked above.

50 km per hour. Dividing the total distance by the total time taken gives the average speed:

average speed = 100 km ÷ 2 h = 50 km h-1

On a journey like this the vehicle cannot hold one speed the whole way — traffic, pedestrian crossings and stops keep changing it. But working out the average speed needs only the total distance and the total time.
