Lesson: Chapter 15 — Fluid Pressure and Its Applications

15.3. Transmitting pressure through liquids 2 of 6

Question 2

In a hydraulic press, what is transmitted through the liquid from the small piston to the large one?

The right answer is the one marked above.

The pressure. The pressure at the two pistons is the same, and because the large piston has the larger area the force it receives is greater.

If it were the force that was transmitted, the large piston would also receive 20 N. The calculation shows otherwise — it receives 400 N.
