Lesson: Chapter 6 — Human body processes

Absorption and the large intestine 2 of 3

What is absorbed, and where it goes

Different products leave the villus by two different routes.

Into the blood capillaries

Amino acids, vitamins, mineral salts, and monosaccharides (glucose, galactose, fructose).

Into the lacteal

Fatty acids and glycerol from lipid digestion. The lacteal is a lymph vessel; its contents reach the blood through the lymphatic system in the end.

When there is extra glucose in the blood it is stored in the liver as glycogen. When blood glucose falls, glycogen is broken down and the glucose added back to the blood. Everything not absorbed moves on into the large intestine.
