Lesson: Chapter 9 — Heat

9.3. Changes of state 4 of 4

Vaporization and evaporation

A liquid turning into vapour is vaporization. It happens in two ways.

Boiling

At the boiling point, with more heat supplied.

Vapour forms under the surface too, which is why a boiling liquid bubbles.

Evaporation

Below the boiling point, slowly.

Only from the surface open to the air.

Why sweating cools us

Clothes dry, and sweat controls our body temperature, by the evaporation of water. Water's specific latent heat of vaporization is large, so the water in sweat takes a large amount of heat from the body as it evaporates.
