Lesson: Chapter 5 — Optics

5.2. Curved (spherical) mirrors 1 of 4

Mirrors that magnify and shrink

A curved mirror can make things look bigger or smaller than they are — and both are useful.

Side mirrors on a vehicle

Convex mirrors show the road behind small, so a wide area fits into the mirror and the driver sees clearly behind on both sides.

Security in shops

Convex mirrors let a wide area of a shop be watched from one place.

The dentist's mirror

A concave mirror makes the teeth look bigger while the mouth is examined.

A shaving mirror

A concave mirror makes the face look bigger while shaving.

Figure to be added

Figure 5.6 — two crayons seen in a concave mirror, looking larger, and in a convex mirror, looking smaller.
