Lesson: Chapter 6 — Human body processes

6.1. Digestion and the digestive system 2 of 2

The organs of the digestive system

The human digestive system is a single tube running from the mouth to the anus. Its structure changes along the way, and glands join it at several points.

Figure to be added

Figure 6.1 — the human digestive system: mouth, salivary glands, epiglottis, oesophagus, diaphragm, liver, gall bladder, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, caecum, appendix, rectum and anus.
Mouth → Pharynx → Oesophagus → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine → Anus

The glands that pour enzymes and other substances into the tube are the salivary glands, the liver and the pancreas.

The digestive system does three jobs: it digests food, absorbs the products, and removes what was not digested from the body.

Assignment 6.1

Using a model of the human torso or a diagram, identify the organs of the digestive system. Pay attention to where each one is, its size compared with the others, and its shape.
