Lesson: Chapter 6 — Human body processes

Disorders of the digestive system 2 of 3

Constipation

Constipation is difficulty passing faeces because they have become hard. It happens when faeces stay too long in the large intestine and too much water is absorbed from them.

  • Too little fibre in the food eaten.
  • Not drinking enough water.
  • Putting off going to the toilet.
  • Some medicines taken for other illnesses.

If it goes on

Straining can tear the lining of the rectum and cause bleeding, and continued constipation can lead to piles.
