Lesson: Chapter 8 — Heat changes in chemical reactions

Heat changes in everyday life 2 of 2

Endothermic reactions around us

Now some processes that absorb heat.

Photosynthesis

Green plants absorb solar energy to make simple sugar. Photosynthesis is an endothermic process.

6CO2 (g) + 6H2O (l) → C6H12O6 (s) + 6O2 (g)

in sunlight, with chlorophyll

Thermal decomposition

Breaking many compounds down by heating is endothermic too. Quicklime is made by heating limestone, and heat is absorbed.

CaCO3 (s) → CaO (s) + CO2 (g)

heat is absorbed
