Lesson: Chapter 6 — Human body processes

Diseases of the respiratory system 1 of 3

Infections

Several diseases of the respiratory system are caused by viruses or bacteria.

Common cold

A viral disease: headache, sneezing, runny nose, cough. There is no medicine for the virus itself; avoiding dust and cold that favour it speeds recovery.

Pneumonia

Bacteria or viruses infect the lungs, and fluid can collect in them. A neglected cold or cough is a main cause; get medical care at once.

Bronchitis

Viral or bacterial infection makes the bronchi swell: heavy coughing and difficulty breathing. The larynx can be infected too, so the voice does not come out properly.

Tuberculosis

A contagious bacterial disease that slowly destroys lung tissue. Signs: coughing up blood, fever, tiredness, loss of appetite and wasting. It is prevented by vaccination and cured by proper treatment.
