Connecting the circuit
Every lamp and socket in a house is connected in parallel.
Switches go in the live
A switch must always be fitted in the live wire. Then, with the switch off, touching the lamp circuit gives no shock.
Socket circuits are made of cable rated for 13 A and carry only sockets; in ordinary homes the kitchen is wired this way.
The ring circuit
Sometimes the sockets are joined in a ring circuit. Current reaches each socket by two paths, along two wires, so thinner wire can be used.
