Why must the chromosome number be halved when gametes are formed?

Because the chromosome number must stay constant after fertilisation. If both gametes carried 2n, the zygote would end up with 4n.

The generation after that would have 8n. Halving is therefore a requirement of sexual reproduction, not an option.
