Lesson: Chapter 5 — Optics

Images formed by a concave mirror 1 of 7

Object between the focus and the mirror

When the object is between the focus and the mirror, the reflected rays spread apart and never meet. The image can only be seen by looking into the mirror.

An object between F and the mirror; the ray parallel to the axis reflects through F and the ray from C reflects back along itself; the two reflected rays spread apart, and traced back, dashed, they meet behind the mirror at a large upright image.

The image

Behind the mirror, further from it than the object is.

Virtual Upright Larger than the object

This is how a shaving mirror is used: the face is held closer than the focal length, and a large upright image appears in the mirror.
