Lesson: Chapter 10 — Power and energy in electrical appliances

Wiring and safety 3 of 3

Safety precautions

Besides the protective devices, these precautions matter.

Never

  • Fit a fuse wire of any rating but the circuit's 6 A or 13 A.
  • Plug several appliances into one socket through a multi-plug so they draw more than it can carry.
  • Push bare wires into a socket instead of a proper plug.
  • Change a blown bulb in a wet place such as a bathroom without first switching off at the overload breaker or main switch.
  • Handle appliances with a wet body, or touch switches with wet hands.
  • Switch appliances on when the supply has failed.

Always

  • Stand on a rubber mat or wear rubber slippers when ironing; a rubber mat in front of the fridge is safer too.
  • Unplug appliances that are not in use.
  • In heavy lightning, disconnect radios and televisions and avoid using electricity (the RCCB gives no lightning protection).
  • In a fire, cut the supply at once at the overload circuit breaker.
  • Have repairs and extensions done by a qualified electrician.
  • Press the RCCB's test button every few days to check it works.
